Return to La Paz and the Aussies arrive

In At Anchor, Living Aboard, Mexico by Adam2 Comments

We made a quick passage south from Bahia Los Angeles to meet our friends from Australia.  They were due to arrive in a few days and we wanted some time to get the boat ready after 6 weeks offshore.  Cleaning and provisioning can take a little time and we wanted the trip to be special for them… after all, they’re travelling a very long way to see us.

As we neared La Paz, it was somewhat hard to believe we’d travelled so far north but, we counted ourselves fortunate that we had favorable winds to travel south.

Upon returning to La Paz, I logged these stats:

  • Days offshore                    46
  • Locations visited               26
  • Miles Travelled                  759.8nm
  • Water produced                All of it!
  • Solar amps produced       11,475ah .. Hello!

Our friends Alan and Elisha arrived in Cabo and we drove down to pick them up.  When they met our Foxy for the first time, they were immediately in the pack.  Instant friends for life!

Setting sail with them was truly perfect.  The wind was light enough to push us along at 5 kts, the sky was clear, the temperature was super comfortable and not being in a hurry… we worked on our tans all the way to our first anchorage.

We spent a few GREAT days anchored off shore at Caleta Partida but then, due to an approaching hurricane, had to cut our trip a little short in order to get back to La Paz and prepare the boat for the impending storm.

With the help of our Australian friends, it took about 2-half days to prepare for the storm.  Once completed, we checked into a hotel across the street and waited for the winds and rain.  It blew 50kts with heavy rain as it crossed Cabo San Lucas but by the time it got to La Paz, the local mountains removed much of the energy of the hurricane.  We were only left with a hotel hurricane party!

In the end… we barely got any rain, very little wind and absolutely no damage to our Volare.  This was a great drill for hurricane preparedness.  In the future, we’re going to have to import our Australian friends for each drill! They earned a permanent invite aboard Volare!

Next stop… We’ll cross to Puerto Vallarta for the Summer.  370nm away should take 3 nights and 4 days if the wind isn’t too strong.
