Shiver me timbers matey. (We’re listening to Treasure Island on audiobook while we sail)
Our first night in Bahia San Francisquito, we awoke to some morning fog that just barely rolled into the anchorage.
After the second night we awoke to sunny sky’s and felt safe to continue north and set out for Bahia Animas.
We were about 20nm from our destination when Jess remarked that the fog was rolling over the island to our east. She asked if I thought it would reach us and the savant in me replied ‘nope’. Maybe that was wishful thinking.
Sv Seaglub was about 6nm behind us when they called and said the fog caught them and it was thick.
About a half hour later it caught us and we were in.
Sv Shamaya about 5 miles in front of us raced it for a while but was eventually engulfed.
What are you going to do? We kept sailing where the wind was blowing us and for a while it was blowing 11-13kt. Since the Monster Blue Parasailor was pulling us along at a good clip we just kept going.
Thank goodness for radar and AIS. We were able to keep track of our sailing friends and the shoreline 10 miles to our port. Tweaking the gain, we were on the lookout for smaller boats like pangas. We didn’t see any as maybe the pangueros had the speed to outrun the fog bank.
Luckily as we neared our destination and turned east, the fog bank stayed offshore and we were able to turn into the anchorage and spend the rest of the afternoon in the sun.
We’re glad we didn’t have to exercise our fog contingency plan… because we really didn’t have a good one.
